Who doesn't want to smooth and youthful skin? With hundreds of products on the market that all make similar promises, it can be difficult to find the right one for you. More important, it's not everyday that you find a product that actually works. If you've been searching for an effective anti-aging product or just need to give your face a healthy boost, our Natural Health expert Lorna Vanderhaeghe has the solution you need and it all starts with just one ingredient!

Did you know that there are 16 different types of collagen? It's a protein that helps with a variety of things when it comes to your body. From making your bones and nails stronger to increasing the thickness of your hair, incorporating collagen into your life has many positive benefits.

How to prevent collagen loss

With summer just around the corner, it's tempting to run outside without thinking twice about protecting your skin. Take the extra time to apply sunscreen before heading for a day out, you'll thank yourself later. One of the biggest contributors to collagen loss is the sun burns and the best way to avoid this is by making sure you always have a bottle of sunscreen in your bag throughout the hotter months. A great option for this is to use a natural sunscreen.

In terms of your food diet, you can actually rebuild collagen by eating it. Think back to the last time you made roast beef or chicken, can you remember the jelly the in the pain after you cooled it? That’s collagen.

A few things you can look out when you're choosing a collagen supplement are polypeptides and elastin. Polypeptides are absorbed directly to create the collagen while elastin holds your skin and collagen in place.

Promote hair and nail growth

Fun fact: by using different nutrients, you can give your body the ingredients it needs to create collagen! Biotin, a B vitamin, is a great source for this and another superstar for building up collagen is choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid. Don't be intimidated by name because this ingredient builds collagen in bones, nails, skin and hair. You can put the drops in your smoothie or coffee and before you know it, your hair will be growing in no time.

How to help with chronic dry skin and other issues

If you suffer from eczema or dry skin, you'll be relieved to know that there are a few new tricks you can try to help redcue it. The fatty acids that are found in food has a relationship with our skin and though this may sound like a bad thing, it doesn't have to be. GLA is one of the best fatty acids for beautiful skin. Typically, those with dry skin, rosacea and eczema don't produce GLA as effectively as others. This can cause a lack of the youthful glow that we all crave. The good news is that you can incorporate more borage oil into your daily life as it's the highest source of GLA. You can also find GLA in over the counter moisturizers.

If you're up for it, Lorna recomends trying the GLA Skin Challenge. This includes eating two tablespoons of GLA per day and also applying a small amount to any face wrinkles at bedtime for 10 days. If you have dry skin or eczema, you can continue these steps until your skin heals.
