When it comes to throwing a party, there is usually tons of prep and clean up involved. Typically, this causes a lot of waste and unnecessary garbage. Thankfully, there are many opportunities to lower waste for the next time you host a get-together! We're sharing four ways that you can have a more eco-friendly party.

OPT FOR LOW WASTE DECOR

The first step when throwing a party is to pick a theme! Keeping things minimal and simple is usually easiest when trying to stay eco-friendly. You'd be surprised how easy it is to repurpose items that you have around your home. For example, flowers from your garden can be used as beautiful centrepieces. If you don't grow flowers, you can pick twigs, pine cones and leaves for a boho aesthetic.

For plates and cutlery, don't be afraid to use what you have in your home if you have a few sets that can be mixed and matched. If your party is on the larger side and you need more dishes, there are neat apps like Bunz that allow you to swap and borrow items that you don't have! It's a great way to avoid waste and utilize the power of community.

Try and avoid using paper towels and napkins. Not only will you save money by using cloth, but they're also simple to clean and reuse!

REDUCE FOOD WASTE

Before ordering in or calling a caterer, shop from your pantry and fridge first to help reduce food waste. When deciding your menu try to incorporate local and seasonal goods. Head to your local farmers market to grab as many items on your list as you can! Pack any leftovers from the party in mason jars for your family and friends for an eco-friendly "take out."

SET UP A DRINK STATION

Having a drink station is a great way to make use of any cute jugs or drink dispensers that you may have at home. Make sure you have lots of water available to eliminate the need for bottled water. If you don't already own the items you need for a drink station, take a peek at a garage sale or home store!

DECREASE YOUR GARBAGE LOAD

To make things as convenient as possible for you and your guests, set up a compost and garbage station. You can line your compost bin with old newspaper to eliminate the waste of plastic bags. The recycling station can be used for any bottles and cans. Though having a garbage station may sound unappealing, you can use metal or coloured bins to match the theme of your party.
