How to get the ‘new country look’ in your home

Give your home 'new country look' with these tips from design expert Michael Penney

  1.  Create a rustic yet fresh backdrop. Add elements like barn board or ship lap or even get the look with shiplap wallpaper like this
  2. Opt for classic and cozy styles of upholstery like a roll armed sofa and chair that don't match but coordinate. A footstool or ottoman add kick back comfort.
  3. Switch things up! Instead of everything matching throw a monkey wrench in your design with something off beat with a story. Here we've gone with Antique French park chairs from a flea market instead of more upholstered chairs.
  4. When in doubt , opt for distressed white finishes. Our coffee table, end tables and chairs are all chippy imperfect white because they create a bright, cheerful and clean backdrop for other colours.
  5. To keep things youthful and nonstuffy add in geometric patterns like stripes and also global prints. These two elements are sure ways to prevent a more dated country look.
  6. Add freshness with plants. - real or faux. A romantic just plucked from the garden bouquet is lovely as are potted plants here and there.
