Both the snake and insect trends have been around for a while, not just in decor but also in fashion. They feature a ton of colour and texture, which really helps elevate and draw attention to any room! Interior Designer Steven Sabados brought his two favourite decor trends to life in our studio and walked us through different ways you can incorporate them into your home.

MAKE A STATEMENT WITH SNAKES

If you have hesitations about adding imagery of snakes into your home decor, you're not alone. Snakes can often have a negative connotation behind them but in a lot of eastern cultures, they're considered mystical creatures with healing powers. Whether you have a modern or classical space, there are numerous ways to incorporate snakes into your decor depending on how much of a statement you want to make. If you're looking to jazz up a contemporary space, don't be afraid to opt for a snake art piece that's creatively unique. Third-dimensional figures and curved elements are another huge trend right now, making a Serpentine Wall Snake a great piece for any space. You can also design a room around bold furniture, such as a printed snake armchair. If you're on the hunt for something subtle, snake pillows are your best bet.

GO WHIMSICAL WITH BUTTERFLIES

Butterfly and insects are another extremely popular trend right now. An inexpensive and easy way to incorporate a whimsical butterfly pattern into your home is by opting for graphic wallpaper. Bright and fun butterfly wallpaper looks especially good in a powder room or as an accent wall. If you're looking for something more subtle that can be tied into any room of the house, prints and art are a great way to do so. Butterfly art is a simple, yet chic way to incorporate the trend without going bold. Another fantastic way to bring the trend to life is by switching out your plaid or striped drapery for a butterfly pattern. Not only will it act like a floral, but it will also bring an elegant touch to your space.

STEVEN'S DIY - CORAL SNAKE PILLOW

Step 1: Cut out a stencil of a snake on heavy acetate (You can use an image of a coral snake from online).

Step 2: Stencil the snake onto the desired fabric, such as a tropical pillowcase, using white acrylic paint.

Step 3: Hand paint stripes onto the snake using black acrylic paint.

Step 4: Hand paint additional stripes using red acrylic paint, creating the iconic “coral” pattern, then let the paint fully dry.

Step 5: Place a thin piece of cotton fabric over the stencilled image then heat set with an iron.
