Chris Palmer and Michael Penney helped one family turn their crowded, underused garage into a beautiful creative space that the whole family can use. Michael has revealed his best DIY tips for wall spaces, and Chris shared his expert advice on creating easy an interesting wood finishes.

For white washing, take any white paint or even primer then dilute it with water approximately 1/4 cup to 1/2 a tray. It's personal taste so the more water the thinner the white colour. Best part is you don't have to buy any special paint or stain, you can use leftover cans to achieve the same finish.

Distressed white finish only works with rough sawn lumber so be sure to have that in hand.

Use a 13mm roller and paint tray, get the roller covered in paint, then simply apply the roller to the wood rolling with the grain with light to medium pressure. The paint will hit all the high points leaving all the lower bare spots to be revealed creating an aged distressed look. You can follow up with a cross hatching brush afterwards to spread out the paint into more areas if needed.

If you ever find you've applied too much paint, simply said it away to create a bare area. Be sure to add a polyurethane to any high traffic surfaces like a desk or mantel.
