THE NEW MARILYN WEBSITE

The four design styles that will define decor decisions in 2020

Whether you just purchased a new home or are thinking about jazzing up your current one, you might be wondering how to find a consistent theme or style that you can carry throughout your entire space. Finding the category that fits your own personal style can seem overwhelming, which is why we asked Interior Designers Jonathan Mann and Julia Tuitt-Mann from Maison J&J Inc. to walk us through four different design styles that are trendy for 2020!

CLASSIC/TRADITIONAL

For those that lean more towards a classic vibe, there’s a huge move towards maximalism which is the perfect mix of traditional and trendy. Maximalism incorporates bold colours, loud patterns, reflective materials and more to really make a statement as it's a reaction against minimalism.

What to incorporate:

  • Botanical prints and patterns
  • Brass objects
  • Busts and statues
  • Lacquered woods
  • Bold paint colours and reflective paint

MODERN

2020 continues to push us towards a more sustainable lifestyle, which plays into having a modern and eco-friendly designed home. The use of colour blocking and abstract furniture statements works well in a modern space.

What to incorporate:

  • Modular furniture
  • Colour blocking
  • Neutral leathers and wood finishes
  • Abstract shapes

TRANSITIONAL

For those that are looking for a mix between modern and classic elements, transitional is the style for you! Antiques and artisanal finishes mixed with pastel colours are the perfect way to tie a transitional style into your home.

What to incorporate:

  • Soft pastel colours
  • Airy patterns
  • Antique-inspired furniture
  • Lived-in feel (nothing too formal)

RUSTIC

If you prefer a warm and rustic feel, the farmhouse trend has definitely grown popularity in recent years. From barn doors to ceramics, the farmhouse style pushes for all things laid-back, lived-in and hand crafted!

What to incorporate:

  • Handcrafted items such as stoneware pieces and textiles
  • Ratan furniture and accessories
  • Soft and natural colours
