The Beauty Essentials That Need To Be In Every Makeup Bag

Beauty expert Chantel Guertin shows us which makeup products should be in your purse, gym bag, and vacation bag!

Do you feel like you’re rushing to the gym, to the office, and you’re always looking for a lipstick but can’t find it? Today we’re going to show you how to pack very specific makeup bags: one for your purse, one for your gym bag and one for your weekend or vacation bag.

First up: for your purse. We’re packing into a small bag. This one is a great size – if it’s too big you’ll never bring it in your purse, so you want it to be small enough that it’s always packed and you can actually move it from purse to purse.

The Jetsetter Personalized Pouch, $25

I feel like, for your purse, we’re talking touchups -- you’ve got your makeup done but you’re at the office going to a meeting or out for drinks. So for this, let’s keep it simple with two key multitasking products: The first is an all in one foundation and powder. This one is The Body Shop’s All in One Face base. So this is going to give you coverage in whatever way you need it – foundation, concealer, powder, it does it all.

The Body Shop All in One Face Base, $24

And then, you need colour. For that, this product is fantastic. It’s brand new, and it’s from Bite Beauty, which is this amazing company where all the lip products are made right in the store. This is their Multistick, which applies like a cream and wears like a powder and comes in 18 shades so you apply this wherever you need a touchup throughout the day. You apply with your fingers to eyes and cheeks and like a regular lipstick to your lips.

Bite Multistick, $28

Gym Bag
You’re going to start with this great bag from Lug, which comes in a two-set. This is the larger size and I like that it’s plastic because you don’t have to worry if it gets wet, plus you can kind of see everything inside of it.

Lug makeup bag, two-piece set, $24.99

Then when you go to the gym, you want to save time by not washing your hair, but we tend to get a little sweaty at the roots, right? For that I love this innovative new product called the Rush Brush from Cake Beauty. It soaks up the oil in your scalp and comes in three shades so you can match your root colour.

Cake Beauty Rush Brush, $16

You’re also going to want to tame any frizzies as well as moisturize your body – Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream All-Over Miracle Oil. This moisturizes head to toe – body, face and hair and lasts eight hours.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream All-Over Miracle Oil, $36

Then for your skin, you want to use your face cream but also get a hit of colour. I love a BB cream or tinted moisturizer for this step but now I’ve found an even better product that does it all but it also targets 16 signs of aging. This is IDC Regen Express Perfection and it comes in a few formulations – you can get the original, a matte version if you’re oily skin but the Perfection is the one with a tint of moisturizer so if you’re just dashing from the gym to the grocery store, you’re treating your skin and feeling good about yourself.

IDC Regen Express Perfection, $59.95

Next you want to do your eye makeup quickly – a lot of eye shadow quads tend to have four increments of the same colour. That’s fine but not great for switching up your look. I love this To Die For Eyeshadow Quad from Teeez Cosmetics – this way no matter if it’s day or night you can get the look you want and you can use it wet or dry, so with an eyeliner brush you can use it to apply as eyeliner. Now, you’ve got to moisturize, but who wants to bring a moisturizer.

Teeez To Die For Eyeshadow Quad, $48

Vacation Bag
You typically have more space in this bag, but it's still smart to pack so that it’s carry-on friendly. That way at the last minute you’re not at the airport realizing that your face cream is over the limit and security is taking it. So we start out with this great bag from Avon, which is fun because it’s draw string so it opens and lays flat so you’re not having to dig around in it.

Avon bag, $20

Then, inside, we’ve got this fantastic set of makeup brushes from Revlon. Why these? Because they’re beveled so when you’re in the hotel bathroom your makeup brushes aren’t rolling off the shelf into the toilet.

Revlon Brush Collection, $14.99-24.99 each

Next, an eyeliner – I always pack a pre-sharpened eyeliner so that you never have to bring a sharpener and unlike a gel or liquid eyeliner which can be tricky to apply, a pencil eyeliner is really quite foolproof even for a novice – or doing your eyeliner on the plane.

CoverGirl Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner in Deep Burgundy, $6.99

Then makeup remover – at home you may have a bottle of makeup remover and pads, but to travel this Marcelle product is my favourite. It’s small, compact and the pads are really effective – I only need one to take off all my eye makeup without any rubbing at all.

Marcelle Eye Makeup Remover Pads, $11.99

And then finally, instead of packing that expensive face cream, you’re going to pack your bag with a few of these sleeping face mask pods from Sephora. You’re going to pop one open, give yourself a face mask while you sleep. You’ll wake up with super hydrated, soft skin so you can skip that night cream altogether.

Sephora Collection Sleeping Mask, $5
