Who can resist this delicious take on the traditional dreidel that combines delicious marshmallows with rich chocolate?
A popular tradition during Hanukkah is spinning the dreidel, which is a four-sided top with Hebrew letters written on each side. The Hebrew letters on each side: Nun, Gimmel, Hay and Shin, stand for the Hebrew phrase "Nes Gadol Haya Sham,” which translates to "A great miracle happened there.”
To make a delicious chocolate marshmallow version of the dreidel, skewer a marshmallow and a chocolate kiss together with a lollipop stick so they are both secure, forming the shape of a the spinning top.
Dip the skewer in semi-sweet chocolate melted in a heat-proof bowl over a pot of boiling water until it’s fully coated and transfer to parchment-lined baking sheet. Before the chocolate can set, recreate one of the four Hebrew characters in blue candy dragees and let it set in the fridge until the chocolate has fully hardened.

During Hanukkah, we eat a lot of fried foods to celebrate the miracle of the burning oil lamp lasting 8 days instead of 1 while the Holy Temple in ancient Jerusalem was under siege by Syrian-Greek emperor Antiochus. One such treat that is commonly served for dessert are powdered sugar jelly doughnuts, called “sufganiyot “in Hebrew.
To dress up your store-bought or homemade sufganiyot, glaze the tops in a brightly-hued icing to coordinate with your Hanukkah party theme colours.
We dipped ours in a festive homemade turquoise icing made of icing sugar, milk and food colouring and sprinkled the tops with matching sanding sugar.
Helpful tip: if buying store-bought sufganiyot, order yours without the dusting of powdered sugar to ensure the icing goes on smoothly.
