Indications for compression only:
  • An adult collapses suddenly
  • A bystander is unwilling, unable, or not sure how to perform full CPR, or is waiting for trained assistance to arrive.
  • A responder does not have a breather barrier and does not want to perform unprotected rescue breaths.
Compression only should not be used when caring for:
  • a drowning person
  • a respiratory emergency that may have caused the cardiac arrest
  • a child or baby
Check, call, care
  • Check the Scene.  Is it safe?
  • Check the Person.
  • Ask the person, “are you okay?”
  • If the person does not respond to your voice, tap the person on the shoulder.
  • Does the person want your help?  If someone is unconscious you can assume you have consent to give first aid.

Check the person’s ABCs: Airway, Breathing, Circulation

Call
Call EMS/9-1-1
Have someone call EMS/9-1-1 and get an automated external defibrillator (AED) if available.

Care
Compression only

Key points:
  • hand placement
  • speed
  • depth (at least 5cm/2")

Push Hard, Push Fast

AEDs
Automated External Defibrillator
Internal defibrillator would be i.e. pace maker

Where they're found
  • Depends on local funding and initiatives
  • Airports
  • Shopping Malls
  • Rec Centres
  • Schools
  • Good idea to be familiar with location of emergency equipment of places you frequent.
  • Usually a sign at the building entrance; large sign showing where the AED is stored
  • Some have a siren that sound if the box is opened, this is a good thing, leave the door open so others know there's an emergency
Easy to use
Turn it on and follow directions.

How they work
  • The machine analyzes the heart rhythm
  • Looking for a rhythm that's chaotic or too fast.  In both cases the heart isn't pumping effectively
  • Defibrillation sends an electrical current through the heart to stop abnormal activity and allows the heart to re-establish normal electrical impulses.  Like doing a ctrl-alt-del on your computer
  • For each minute the person waits for defibrillation the chance of suvival drops 7-10%.
