Michael Fazio offers advice on tipping etiquette and what the correct amount is to tip for different services.
What is the correct amount?
• 15 – 20%
• Keep in mind that tipping is not a form of judgment. Stiffing for bad service might feel good, but you will make a bigger difference by leaving a tip, but expressing your dissatisfaction. I’ve done this and a waitress apologized and offered to give my tip back. (Of course, I didn’t take it back!)
Does the amount change depending on the services you are receiving i.e. salon, bar, restaurant?
Salon
• Salons are less about percentage and more focused on a “standard and customary” amount based on the extent of the service.
1. A quick manicure = $3 - $5 (which is more than 20%, but you can’t really give less.
2. Basic hair services (cut/blow out/style) $10 is fine $20 is extra nice.
3. Hair color $20 and up. Keep in mind the amount of time you are occupying in the chair.
Maitre ‘d
1. First get what you want from them….their business card with direct number and email
a. Do this by introducing yourself and letting them know that you hope to keep coming back
b. If you get the card from them, $20 is the minimum. $100 means you will never have to worry about a reservation
Bar
1. Pub or neighborhood place = $1 per drink
2. Upscale bar/lounge = $2 per drink if you are ordering drinks that require mixology
Is tipping in cash better than paying the tip on your credit card?
* Not necessarily, the individual will receive their tip with either method of payment. That being said, I always leave a little extra if I use my credit card just in case.
Should you tip more over the holidays and how much more per service?
* Holiday tips should be unrelated to the bill…give them a separate “happy holidays” gesture of an extra $20…it’s OK to say “this is for our bill and here’s a little something extra to say happy holidays”
