Leslie Rose Returns to "Game of Thrones"

One thing the new season of "Game of Thrones" won't be is predictable.  According to actress Rose Leslie, "Season three is going to be an incredibly exciting season, and there are going to be lots of twists and turns. I think viewers are going to be pleasantly surprised, but also shocked at the same time. I mean the beloved characters get pushed and turned to the extreme."
Leslie who plays Ygritte joined the Emmy award winning show at the end of the second season. "Once I found out I was going to be part of the show. I just dived into the books and kind of read as fast as I could and it's a real page turner. You can't put it down." The series is based on several books written by George R.R. Martin, which Leslie began reading to prep for her role.
Her character is a Wildling who lives North of the 800 foot ice wall, which functions to keep the White Walkers out. "So she comes from harsh landscapes," she adds.
The majority of Leslie's scenes are shot in Iceland meaning the temperatures are often -17 Celsius.  "Underneath all the fur and the costume. I have layers and layers of thermals."
Marilyn remembers when she wasn't as cold playing Gwen in "Downton Abbey." In that show her character was a maid who had aspirations outside of housework.
"It was wonderful to play somebody who wanted to challenge the stigma," comments Rose.
One similar circumstance the actress shared with her characters, Gwen and Ygritte  was that they are they all are surrounded by castles. Specifically, Leslie called a castle her home because her parents owned one. "It sounds so much cooler than it actually is. I promise. It is cold and it's drafty." Despite the draft she says, "I feel very blessed and it was a phenomenal childhood."
But what is in store for Ygritte? "That's the beauty of the show, you never know."
The Emmy award winning show's third season premieres Sunday, March 31 at 9pm ET/MT on HBO Canada. For more information go to www.hbocanada.com
