Making Music with Meaghan
by: Lexi Berkowitz
You would never know it by her music, but Meaghan Smith doesn’t read music! As a member of a musically inclined family Smith’s mother attempted to teach her to read music, unfortunately it never stuck. In later years she was diagnosed with a learning disability, but she didn’t let that stop her from learning to play by ear.
Meaghan Smith’s new album, “Have a Heart” is a complete departure from her Juno winning album “The Cricket’s Orchestra.” “It’s very pop,” said Smith of her new sound. It’s no surprise considering her producer’s previous work includes albums for Annie Lennox, Ellie Goulding and One Direction. This time around Smith also tried her hand at writing and co-wrote many of the songs on the album.
What sets Smith’s music apart from other pop acts on the scene is her soulful lyricism. Smith wrote “Mirror” for her sister after a phone conversation that turned self-defeating. The song is about making her sister see what Meaghan sees (hence the title), which is an amazing, inspirational person and a real-life “super hero.”
Look out for the “Mirror” music video, shot entirely underwater out soon and Meaghan Smith’s much anticipated album “Have a Heart” on April 22.
