“The Muppets” return thanks to Jason Segel

By: Violetta Holl, Marilyn.ca

After starring in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “How I Met Your Mother” who knew that Jason Segel would be most proud of “The Muppets.”

He is the executive producer and writer of the movie, and admits, “I do some dancing and singing as well.”

It’s no secret that Segel is a giant Muppets fan. Because he is only 31 he was not old enough to watch the live version of “The Muppets Show,” but his mother taped it to show him at a later time.  Segel wanted to bring back the characters after so many years because he says, “I felt like our generation got to experience something that really influenced who I am, and I think kids deserve the same thing.”

His favourite characters were Kermit and Fozzie Bear. He looked up to them and wanted to be an entertainer because of them.  “When you’re a kid Kermit is like Tom Hanks,” he says. While Fozzie Bear reminded Segel of himself. “ Doesn’t matter how bad the jokes are he (Fuzzy Bear) keeps on trying. “ Segel laughs.

All the celebrities who did cameos in the film were asked to do a Fozzie Bear impression. These hilarious bits will be available as DVD extras.

“Everybody wanted to be in this, especially people with kids,” says Segel. The cast includes Amy Adams, Sarah Silverman, Neil Patrick Harris, Alan Arkin, Whoopi Goldberg, Emily Blunt, John Krasinski and many others who Segel wants to leave as a surprise.

“There’s something really neat about when kids would come to set, and I think it’s what separates “The Muppets” apart from anything else. They exist in the same world we exist in. You can meet Kermit and touch him. You can’t meet Shrek, he lives in a computer.”

Segel explains that when children come to set it takes about 5 seconds for them to notice Kermit. They don’t notice the puppeteer who is standing there doing the voice. “You got to be the cool mom and dad saying I got to do a movie with Kermit. Even the famous people in the movie aren’t as famous as Kermit.”

“The Muppets” are out in theatres November 23, 2011.
