What do you write in a thank you note?

A thank you note is generally written to one person.  You write this note to thank someone for something they may have done for you or given you.  Never just write one line saying "thank you for the scarf" you must both thank someone for the scarf and elaborate on "how it perhaps matches your winter coat" or "how you will think of Aunt Sally on cold winter days when you wear this scarf."

How much should you write in a thank you note?

You should write the amount that you feel most comfortable with.  But a little more is always better than a little less.

When is a thank you note necessary?

Whenever in doubt, then you always write a thank you note.  You will never be criticized for a note, but you will always be criticized for not writing a note.

The short answer is it’s always necessary. There is never an occasion when it is not necessary to write a thank you note.

Should you always mail a thank you note or can you give it in person?

Mailed is ideal, hand delivered and left in the mailbox is my second choice, but ideally I would never give it to the person as that is awkward.

How long do you wait to send a thank you note?

In a perfect world it is always sent the next day, but within the week is ideal.

Who do you address the thank you note to?

Only address it to the person you are thanking, so if Aunt Sally gave you a present just from her, you thank Aunt Sally, not Sally and her husband

What type of stationary should you use?

Any type of thank you stationary is fine.

Can you just send an email?

You can, but a hand written note holds more weight, but if you are absolutely unable, than yes an email is OK but never ever text.

How do you properly put a thank you note in the envelope?

So that when you pull it out the note is properly looking at you without having to turn it around in any particular direction.

Should you expect a response after they’ve received the thank you note?

One never responds to a thank you note, it is always one way.
