With new beauty products arriving on shelves on a regular basis it’s hard to know what to use, how to use it or what’s right for you. To help demystify the beauty aisle is makeup artist, Karen Malcolm-Pye.
I want to know how to apply mascara and liner without it smudging and becoming raccoon eyes by the end of the day.
This is a very common question from those who want their makeup to stay intact throughout the day.
Raccoon eyes occur when the oils on our skin, or moisture from our eyes, cause the makeup to run. Some people produce more oil than others and therefore have a bigger issue with it.
A long wearing eyeliner, like this one from Revlon’s Colorstay line. The eyeliner is perfect whether you wear it on the top lash, bottom lash, or your water line. Once you apply it on, the eyeliner locks into the skin for an all-day wear.
No eye look is complete without a great mascara! A tubular type mascara like the Marc Jacobs Gel Definition Mascara is perfect. The gel formula coats lashes from base to tip and won’t flake or run, plus it will last all day.
Revlon ColorStay Liner, $9.95; available at drugstores and mass retailers
Marc Jacobs Lash Lifter Mascara, $31; available at Sephora, www.sephora.ca
How can I apply foundation quickly for a smooth look without looking cakey or having it settle into fine lines?
A BB cream can be applied with your hands for those days when you just need to get out the door. This BB Cream from Jane Iredale is great because it doesn’t clog pores making it ideal for sensitive skin and you won’t get cakey. The great thing about BB creams is that they contain everything your skin needs, even SPF protection. You only need about a pea sized amount for your entire face. You can use your fingers for the application, the warmth from you fingers on your skin helps blend the foundation in fast and seamlessly.
Jane Iredale BB Cream, $56, available at various salons. Visit www.stogryn.ca for more information.
I never wear makeup at all and I’m noticing fine lines around my lips. What products can I wear to hide them?
The lip line perfector from Makeup Forever is going to fill in all those fine lines and help prevent lipstrick from bleeding. Just apply it around the the outline of your lips for invisible protection.
If you want some colour, too, opt for a long lasting pencil. Not only will they last all day but it will prevent smudging and bleeding into the lines. MAC’s Longwear pencil acts like a stain but doesn't dry out your lips; once dry it’s there to stay. You line your lips and fill them in completely with the color. From here you can choose to use a lipstick, lipgloss or lip balm if you want a different color or texture.
Makeup Forever Lip Line Perfector, $23; available at www.sephora.ca and Makeup Forever Boutiques
M∙A∙C Cosmetics Pro Longwear Pencil, $23; available at MAC Counters, www.maccosmetics.com
