Chinoiserie Chic Chalkboard

Materials

• Ornate frame
• Matte black spray paint
• Measuring tape
• 1/8” MDF board (or masonite)
• Primer
• Chalkboard paint
• Small finishing nails
• Hammer
• Picture hanging hardware

Instructions

1. Find an ornate frame and spray-paint it matte black
2. Measure the opening of the frame for the piece of MDF board. Have your building-supply store cut it down to size.
3. To prepare the masonite for paint, lightly sand the smooth side with 120- or 140-grit sandpaper (this will allow the paint to adhere best to the surface). Wipe the surface with a damp cloth to clean away all dust.
4. Apply one coat of primer. Allow to dry.
5. Paint using specialty chalkboard paint. Apply as per instructions.
6. Secure the board to the back of the frame using finishing nails and a hammer. Attach the picture-hanging hardware to the frame.
7. The keys to success are to apply several coats (two to three), let each dry thoroughly, and allow the final coat to cure for several days before writing on the surface.
