Glen Peloso Tips on How to Dress your Home when it comes to Accessories

Accessories are the element that finish a room and make it your own.

Many people go out to shop without a purpose. This is called reverse design – you have a thing and are looking for a place as opposed to having a place and looking for the right proportions of thing to fit it

Make sure you address the functional accessories first before you move on based on how the space will be used:

  • Throw blanket
  • Kidney cushion

Start with the larger items and work toward the smaller ones:

  • The side table
  • The lamp
  • The photo frame
  • The ornamental object

When you are placing accessories think in terms of triangles or cone shapes (like trees and mountains) taller to shortest grouping.  We are most comfortable with that shape as it is so regularly found in nature.

The kind of accessories are determined largely by the design style the largest pieces of furniture you have – ie – a traditional sleigh bed likely won’t have a super modern accessory.

Art is never considered an accessory and it really doesn’t need to “go” with anything – it just has to appeal to you as the viewer –  modern art with traditional furniture is great – scale matters in terms art but that all that has to “go”.

Accessories that really grab focus or are things that really mean something to you are places that you can spend a little more money:

  • Red glass vase
  • Something acquired on a vacation or from your heritage
  • Cut glass vase that will be used again and again
  • Storage boxes

Save your money on items that are to be changed:

  • Throw pillows
  • Candles
  • Paper weight

Bed side table needs to be accessorized but with a function:

  • Clock radio with the right time
  • Water glass
  • Lamp
  • Book mark
  • Leave room for guests to have their own belongings:
  • Venetian glass (mirrored side table are great as they have no aesthetic weight)
  • Put felt pads on items that will go on glass or mirrored surface to avoid scratches

You don’t always have to buy more accessories – they can be moved around the house:

  • From living room to bedrooms with pictures
  • To the cottage with throws and cushions
  • Cushions to beds

Change up the accessories seasonally to keep the room feeling fresh – you don’t have to move everything but some things make you feel better.

The nature of accessories (just like fashion) is that you grow tired of them and want something new. – consumable accessories leave you feeling the best about discarding as they are consumed (candles, flowers, art cards etc)

Finding a good accessory shop can be difficult.  If you know precisely what you want then you can search by internet – otherwise know the shape and size of what you are looking for and walk with colour swatches from the room and discover the right thing when it happens!
