How to Get Your Outdoor Space Ready for a Summer's Worth of Entertaining

The key to creating an inviting space that people want to come back to is thinking of your outdoor space as an extension of your indoor space.
Your taste and color palettes should flow and your outdoor space should be planned for usability and should be well appointed.

The key things every good outdoor space should have:

  • Ample seating
  • rugs
  • lanterns/lighting
  • umbrellas
  • occasional tables
  • pillows

Make it well-appointed:

  • there should be side tables to set down your drinks as a practical matter
  • there should be the option for shade for those you cannot tolerate direct sun
  • there should be outdoor friendly tabletop so that if things get knocked over it’s not a big deal.  Melamine plates, polycarbonate glassware (especially if you are poolside)
  • don’t forget things like lighting and music and how that can add to the party.

Great entertaining tips:

  • create a signature drink and put it in a drink dispense and allow guests to self serve
  • Pick one new seasonal item for the outdoor table to make it fun and festive (napkins, table runner etc…)
  • Use big platters to create a beautiful display
  • Use polycarbonate glassware so you can relax and not worry about breakage
  • Have citronella candles to keep bugs at bay
  • Create your playlists well in advance so you don’t have to fiddle with music at the party
  • Always have vegetarian and gluten-free options
